Tomorrow is my first day at the new restaurant. I’m getting the familiar anxiety I used to feel before the first day of school. On the bright side, these past ten days have been filled with quality time with family, friends, and of course Honey Bunny. We went out to eat on multiple occasions, exploring parts of the city that we had lacked the time to visit. Honey Bunny’s birthday, my belated Christmas present, and the most intriguing — a restaurant that was offering a promotion for the month of February for any person who works in the back of house (BOH). Because kitchen employees are notoriously underpaid and overworked, this restaurant provided a free six course tasting menu for the BOH member and 50% for any guest, other food ordered, etc. So cool!
Before I start my first shift at the restaurant, I have to go in a few hours early for on-boarding with HR. I’ll get my employment contract, chef’s coat, locker assignment, and all that goodness. I had forgotten to pick up my legal documents for the “employment eligibility verification” mumbo-jumbo at my parents’ house, but my dad swung by after he got off work to drop them off for me. As he drove away, he waved proudly and wished me luck for tomorrow. It immediately brought back memories of getting dropped off at first days of school, at the dorm during freshman year of college… It almost brought me to tears (of joy).
Oh, who am I kidding? I lost it as soon as I walked back into my unit and started crying like a baby. Throughout this whole journey, and especially after my announcement last week of my next adventure, I have been so overwhelmed by the support and love I’ve received from my parents, my beloved Honey Bunny, my family, my friends, even strangers and acquaintances. I can’t thank you all enough and I’m looking forward to sharing this next chapter as well. Onward and upward!
