I have a valid excuse for the lack of posts this week — I was on a mini vacation with my family! We drove back yesterday morning and man, was that brutal. I had received a text the night before from Sous Chef S saying that one of the guys had been MIA all week so we needed to come in at 10am to catch up on NYE prep. That meant waking up at 3am to be in the car by 4am.
Luckily there wasn’t a whole lot of charcuterie prep since I had planned ahead the week before. I was assigned to Pastry on NYE since we had a special menu that included wellis (always popular) plus four desserts. It would be literally impossible for Pastry Girl to do it all alone. We made a great team during both prep and service! We didn’t miss a single ticket or wellington, and everything made it to the pass in a timely manner.
Our last dessert ticket came in at 11:45 and it was a mad rush for all of us to get cleaned down and changed in time to go out front to the bar for celebratory drinks and watching the ball drop at midnight. Bar Manager L poured a round of shots of Jameson whiskey as well as beers. After not having slept nor eaten much, the alcohol hit me hard and poor Honey Bunny had to come pick me up at 2 in the morning (sorry again dear).
While we were hanging out, though, we were all feeling sad and nostalgic that this would be the last big party/event at the restaurant. Pastry Girl, who probably had a little too much, told me how much she loves me and how she sincerely hopes that we’ll get to work together someday. She also reminisced about when I first staged at the restaurant and how she “always liked me from the start” and knows I “have what it takes to be a great chef.” It was nice. Chef wished us all a happy new year before he left and when he got around to hugging me, he told me that this is only the beginning.
2015 is going to be a great year.
